4 things to decided when looking for motor boats for sale

The first thing you need to decide is how much you want to spend on a Motorboat?

You can find Motor Boats for sale from as little as a few thousand pounds to several million. As a beginner you may want to start of small and buy something that is cheaper and easy to manage. If you are a complete novice then a boat up to 25ft in length would be ideal. Something else you need to remember is buying a Motor Boat doesn’t just stop at the purchase price, there are also all the on going fees to consider like mooring costs, running costs (such as fuel prices) and maintenance costs. On average you can expect to pay a minimum of 10% of the purchase price per year running your boat.

What type should you buy, Motor Boat, Motor Yacht or Motor Cruiser?

As confusing as that sounds all 3 of those actually mean the same thing, a motorboat, motor yacht or motor cruiser are just a type of boat that is powered by a petrol or diesel inboard engine but depending on what Country you are in it may be described differently.

What type of engine is best for my Motorboat?

There are currently on two choices of engines for your motor yachts, that being either petrol or diesel both of which have their good and bad points.

Boats with petrol engines tend to cost less to buy, this is because petrol engine are less fuel efficient than diesel engines and therefore cost more to run. Petrol engines generally cost more to maintain as more parts are required for each service (like spark plus, HT leads etc)

Diesel powered boats cost more to purchase as they are much more fuel efficient than petrol powered ones but will require less maintenance.

Generally speaking petrol powered boats are also quicker than diesels so this is another factor to consider when buying one but. Weigh up all the options and make the right choice for your situation but our advice is always go for a diesel powered boat.

What type of mooring should I get for my Boat?

There are three main types of mooring, a Pontoon, buoy or Swing type.
Pontoon moorings are the sort where you have a floating platform that you can walk on and tie your boat off too. These are either connected to the shore for easy access of some will be fixed to poles out in the water but require a small boat to get to them. Once you have moored your boat on one of these it stays in that location/position. These ten to be the most expensive but nicest type.
Next we have the buoy mooring, these will always be out in the water and are simply two floats a set distance apart for you to tie the bow and stern of your boat off to. These tend to be cheaper than pontoon moorings as there is no walking platform and you need another small boat to get to them.

And finally we have the swing type mooring. These are one single float that you tie the bow of your boat to and as the name suggests they allow your boat to move around with the current/tides. These will always be your cheapest option but are also the ones that require the most checks. As your boat moves around they can easily break loose and if you haven’t left enough room your boat can also swing into any neighbouring boats too.

Our advice is always go for a pontoon type if you can afford it.
